I believe I recall correctly that George frequently built and tuned
organs (at least those for churches) in "good, old-fashioned" <g> Kirnberger
III for some years, and that he displayed a small instrument in that tuning
at an AGO Convention prior to its installation. [Was it the 1976 one-manual
for Squirrel Island Chapel in Maine, and the Convention in Boston?] George,
an experienced organist as well as a builder, found service playing in this
tuning to be attractive and enjoyable for all concerned.
It was from a former employee of his that I got the idea of tuning small
church instruments in K III, which I have done in several instances where
the instrument's historical integrity is not compromised in the process (as
by trimming pipe lengths, etc.). The results are very good, and typically
evoke responses like "This organs sounds so *solid*" from visiting
instrumentalists and singers.
