Thanks Deon
It was wonderful, at St. Michael's Observatory, to be part of an Old
Prayer Book Mass so beautifully and sincerely offered.
It's been nearly 30 years since I sang the Propers. So much meaning is
thereby imported to the scriptures appointed for the day, and these
threads of plainsong are a great way to enhance the action at key points
in the service. Periods that otherwise be masked by (in my case)
meandering extemporisation or embarrassed silence.
I shall at my own Parish of St. George in Parktown be leading a crusade
for their re-introduction.
In with the new, but in with the old too!
Peter Black

Trinity V
9.30am High Mass:
(The Rev Fr Michael Parker)
C.S. Lang : Fanfare
Propers : Exaudi, Dominus
Service : Darke in E
Anthem : The Lord hath been mindful of us - S.S. Wesley
Int : Praise to the Lord, the Almighty - Praxis pietatis
Grad : City of God, how broad and far - Richmond
Off : Angel-voices ever singing - Angel voices
Com : O my Saviour, lifted - North Coates
Rec : Hosanna in the highest - Hosanna in excelsis
Faulkes : Grand Choeur
We had the pleasure of a visit from Peter Black, organist of St
George's Parktown, who came and sang in the choir. He is a spendid
bass and I rather wish I could have his services a lot more often!
It's always nice to experience generous co-operation - rather than
bitchy rivalry - from one's fellow musicians.
Off to the UK tonight where, nothing untoward occurring, I shall be
in the loft at the Abbey for next Sunday's evensong (Howells:
Gloucester Service; Walton: The Twelve) , before drifting down to
Chichester for the Southern Choirs Festival.
Cheers
