very interesting to read what some of you do/don't do!
I tend to keep it simple so everyone can sing along and the choir can harmonize as they wish. I only get creative on the final verse of a boisterous recessional hymn!
However, I usually need time after a short Offertory hymn, because we incense each Sunday, so I do some improvising on the theme and wandering around the key until the incensing of the congregation is done. Our celebrant has his back to the congregation at that point (but is facing the nuns behind the altar) so when he hears me STOP playing, he knows the incensing is done and he can begin the Prayer !
to each his/her own!
