The pitch was indeed changed -- the organ sounds in even higher
Chorton now, a' = 495,45 Hz, which appears to have been the original
pitch, as far as it could be determined from the much worked-on
pipework. The organ has one of the most complete collections of
original baroque reeds in the world -- 14 ranks in total. Their
original pitch was also the high Chorton; the sound, rather round and
smooth, is of a quality that is quite typical for Schnitger.

Many recordings have been made with the organ after 1993, at least
two of which are available from the OHS catalogue (http://
ohscatalog.stores.yahoo.net/index.html); click "search" and type
"Schnitger" or "Hamburg". Today the organ sounds very powerful and
impressive. Harald Vogel used it for vol. 7 of his Buxtehude
recordings at MD+G (see http://www.mdg.de/titel/0427.htm), to my ears
one of the best Buxtehude recordings available.

Best,
Friedrich
