Hi, Y'all,
I agree totally with Jeff in that the organ is wonderful for both music and
the spoken word, and I'll add choral music, as well. Actually my first
concert last year was the chamber choir from the symphony chorus. The singers were
able to have super softs which were barely audible and the fortissimos were
very loud without the sense of the choir screaming; the dynamic range and
diction was whatever the conductor needed and wanted from the chorus.
I don't agree with Jeff when he says the Hall isn't particularly elegant. I
think just the opposite. But, it's a matter of opinion; you will be able to
judge for yourself in 2012 at the National Convention, or hopefully before
that.
I have spent some time with the organ, both in an empty hall and at the
orchestra concert. I also emceed the "Meet the Organ" event co-sponsored by the
Symphony and the Nashville Chapter. It was interesting to me that Mr. Bethards
sited Calvin Hampton's 1979 article in the Diapason as the basis for his
concept of the Nashville organ. I remember the article and remember some lively
conversation on this List, too. Is this the first time a builder used
Calvin's article as the basis for a concert hall specification? The organ is a rich,
full-bodied, wonderful, wonderful instrument, and will serve the needs of
the orchestra and the organ soloist for many, many years.
Have a great week,
