<< While I was in San Francisco, I did some walking around: found some other
churches of interest: St. Dominic's, and St. Ignatius Loyola. But I have no
idea what kind of music program either has. St. Ignatius Loyola --- located
way out, near Golden Gate Park --- is a huge church: there seems to be an
organ in the rear gallery, but I don't know if it's in use. Then: there's
that church in Little Italy --- frequently shown in TV crime dramas! And the
 old cathedral in Chinatown.

St. Dominic's is a very beautiful church in French Gothic style. I have
played a recital there. The organ is a large-ish Woodberry and Cole (c. 1909
as I recall) with a much more recent console. The sound is very "refined"
(read, "wimpy") and although there are some pretty stops, the overall effect
was rather pallid to my ears. The room does little to help the organ.

St. Ignatius is indeed a very large church with two or three galleries. The
organ is in the front; a good size Swain & Keates, rebuilt by ??? Tim Tikker
recorded Tournemire on this organ. Room acoustics do not live up to the
visual impression. David Farr is organist now.

The church in Little Italy is presumably SS Peter and Paul, a handsome church
of fairly generous dimensions. I have also played and heard this organ. It
is a medium-sized Schoenstein of unusual design (not unusual for
Schoenstein!). It sounds quite good in the room, less so at the console. For
a good-sized room, the acoustics are almost unbelievably dead and the organ
compensates well for this, in my opinion.

Residents of the Bay Area, please correct me if I'm mistaken!
