Hello, All,

It's amazing to me, an organ enthusiast who has little time to learn to play, that the subject of temperments brings such broad-brush comments from sophisticated people who can play excellent performances of 19th century French organ repertoire, but don't distinguish between the various well-tempered systems and the various mean tone systems.

As far as I am able to gather, the argument for the well-tempered systems is that they leave some key color, but do not leave temperment to the mercy of conductors or performers AND they are not as drastic as mean tone or similar variants . . . 

I wish we could do a bit better as far as temperments  
are concerned.  I think the effects of these tunings are rather subtle.  Could I propose that one not post on this subject unless one has tuned at least one unequal temperament . . . probably not . . .
