The fact that some people in the pews fail to detect that an organ is
badly out of tune neither excuses the situation nor helps the future of the pipe
organ. While it is true that thousands of organists brag that they cannot
tell the difference between a pipe organ and an electronic simulation, they are
not the ones purchasing organs and hiring organists.
Maybe it is time to educate churches and churchgoers instead. This is
quite easily accomplished in a matter of minutes.
While the United States has willfully descended into a miasma of
contempt for most things sophisticated and educated over the past half-decade, why
should we, as artists, take up the cause?
Acceptance of mediocrity is proximate to endorsing it.
Do you wish to play an organ that has been incompetently tuned? Might
there be at least ONE worshipper or concertgoer who actually CAN tell when an
instrument is in tune? Do you not WANT to raise the standards of those you
serve?
What kinds of standards do you wish to have applied to the work you do
as an organist or director? When will you be supplanted by somebody who is
simply "adequate" or "enthusiastic," because "nobody can tell the difference"?
