To share a personal moment in advance: with so many research/
publication projects not progressing fast enough, I've decided to curtail
my concert career and will play my "last" recital on Sunday afternoon at
St. Joseph Church, Lancaster PA, with perhaps the vague possibility of
coming out of "recital retirement" on rare occasions in the future.
(For example, I've pondered the notion of returning to my undergraduate
alma mater to play my senior recital over again 50 years later! And
that's some years off!)

Sunday's fare is chosen in large part to suit the large 1891 Carl
Barckhoff tracker at St. Joseph's Church:

                                        I
Hymn: Grosser Gott, wir loben dich (It's a strongly
German Catholic parish, and the recital
                                opens a parish 150th annviversary year;
people are invited to sing Stanza 1
_auf deutsch from the printed program)
Dupre Pre & Fug in g
Boellmann Ronde Francaise (a cute, favorite piece)
        Franck Grande Piece Symphonique

                                        II
Hymn: This Is the Feast - Richard Hillert (a favorite
                                of the parish pastor)
Bach Pre & Fug in G, BWV 550
Daynes As the Dew From Heaven Distilling
Manz Chorale Prelude on "Wie schoen leuchtet der
                                Morgenstern"
Reger Fantasie on "Wie schoen leuchtet..."

The Barckhoff has enormous scales!! To play the Manz chorale
prelude with its 4' _cantus firmus_ in the pedal, one needs to play it an
octave lower and use the Great-manual 2' principal instead. It's so wide
as to sound more like a flute; you'd never think you're hearing a
principal!!

The organ, especially the Great manual, maintains terrific
intensity to the top of the manual, providing real strength up there ala
Cavaille-Coll. I'll play the hymns an octave higher and on a 16'
foundation as 8' pitch to take advantage of that intensity.

The organ enjoys a marvelous acoustical and visual environment and
excellent care from Columbia Organ Works.

They're having a real "spread"--FOOD!!!--afterward, and the event
is worth the food alone!! hese German Catholics really know how to
cook. Indeed, the church location is affectionly known to us locals
as "Cabbage Hill" because of the "krauts" who live there and go to the
Catholic and Lutheran churches there. The food starts ca.4:30; the
recital is 3 p.m. or whenever the organist is ready. :-)

        Auf wiedersehn, Berichten.
                                                Cordially,

                                                Karl E. Moyer
                                                Lancaster PA
