Ever since the completion of the Schoenstein V/130 organ in the LDS Conference
Center a few years ago we have fielded numerous inquiries regarding solo
recordings of the instrument. Two recordings have just been released which we
hope will fill the void.
This past Monday, "Now Let Us Rejoice" was released on the Mormon Tabernacle
Choir label. The disc features Tabernacle organists John Longhurst, Clay
Christiansen and Richard Elliott performing hymn settings by J. S. Bach, Seth
Bingham, Douglas Bush, Charles Callahan, Clay Christiansen, Robert Cundick,
Walford Davies, Richard Elliott, Robert Hebble, James Kasen, John Longhurst,
Robert Manookin, Paul Manz, David Schack, Frederick Swann, Ralph Vaughan
Williams, and Dale Wood. Detailed information may be found at
www.mormontabernaclechoir.org. The CD comes with a 24-page full color
booklet which includes comprehensive information on each selection as well as
photos of the organ and a complete specification.
A second CD, "The Wonder of Christmas," will be officially released in a couple
of weeks but is already available for purchase. (More information at
http://www.mormontabernaclechoir.org/products/recent?sort=date.) This recording
contains selections from recent Christmas concerts featuring the Mormon
Tabernacle Choir and the Orchestra at Temple Square, along with guest artists
Renee Fleming, Angela Lansbury, Audra McDonald, Bryn Terfel, and Frederica von
Stade.
While the Christmas CD is primarily a showcase for the choir, soloists, and
orchestra, there is one solo organ track featuring the author of this posting
playing Keith Chapman's "Bring a Torch, Jeanette Isabella" on the Schoenstein.
Unlike the other tracks, which were recorded live at the Christmas concerts, the
Chapman piece was taped in January 2006 at the request of the producers, who
wanted an organ solo and who had heard "Bring a Torch" performed on the 25
December 2005 broadcast of "Music and the Spoken Word." Other tracks which
involve the organ in an ensemble role with orchestra and choir are: "Joy to the
World;" "O Come, All Ye Faithful" (transposed for Bryn Terfel, which enabled the
organist to pull out the 64' stops for the final A major chord); "Christmas
Processional: Gloria in Excelsis," which employs some nice dialogues between
organ and orchestra; "Angels from the Realms of Glory;" and the Hallelujah
Chorus.
Incidentally, I receive no royalties from either of these recordings, so I can
honestly say that I am posting this as a public service and not in order to line
my pockets. (Not that there is much danger of any organist doing that these
days.)
