No, perhaps not as a sub for a Swell Stopt Diapason, but it can
certainly serve as the "larger" flute in the "quatre fonds" on the Great
equally well as a Clarabella .. there are some amazing examples of
*that* stop out there as well ... ...

I've heard both 2m and 3m 19th century American organs in which a Doppel
Flute or a Clarabella was the *only* Great Flute at 8', and it worked
just fine. If one needed a softer flute or a different color, there was
usually a 16' Bourdon that could be played up an octave. 16' Bourdon +
8' Dulciana played up an octave used to be one of my favorite Chant
accompaniment combinations.

The pairing of an open or harmonic or doppel flute with a stopped or
chimney flute at 8' on the same manual has fallen into disuse, at least
among some American builders, but it's absolutely essential for French
romantic music. The direction "Flute et Bourdon" occurs over and over
and over again.

I don't have the stop-list in front of me, but the restored 3m K & G in
Plum St. Temple, Cincinnati preserves that pairing at least on the
Great, if memory serves.

Concerning the "quatre fonds" ... I was looking at that excellent site
about Cavaille-Coll organs in Buenos Aires, and it's interesting to note
that even on the smallest organs, the "quatre fonds" is virtually the
*first* item to be completed, followed *not* by the Recit anches, but
rather by the Recit chorus of harmonic flutes at 8-4-2.
