Many decades ago I ran lights for a concert by Rudolph Serkin at Memorial
Auditorium in Burlington, VT (I was in school and got paid for it too).
During the concert I was back stage and heard this odd noise and a thumping.
It almost sounded like a custodian was sweeping the stairwell. I looked
around and eventually looked onstage. Mr. Serkin was there making glorious
music and at the same time humming (moaning?) along with it and stomping his
foot keeping time. I learned later that this was a particular problem during
his recording sessions.
