This whole idea of finding the balance between personal
expression by the performer and faithfulness to the ideals of a
given composer and time leads to some interesting ways of
looking at music. To me, finding this balance is almost the
foundation of a given interpretation, and perhaps the reason for
"mis-intepretation" over the years comes from taking the wrong
things for granted as either open to opinion or not.

While I've been focusing on Bach lately because he really is
my favorite, and also because I've had a surge in excitement for
his music after getting the harpsichord last fall, I think this
could and should be applied to most historic music. One
composer who I think is often misinterpreted yet, even to this
day, because of wrong assumptions about the period--
and one of my favorite composers, is (are you ready?)
