Sometimes it happens that a particular organ in a particular church or
auditorium might be a waste of money. But then, we learn from any
mistakes. I can cite one waste-of-meny case in Ireland where a tunable
electronic keyboard was integrated as a second manual into a one-manual
pipe organ. that was taking digital substitution in a pipe organ to an
extreme degree. But now, this is such a unique combination, at least in
Ireland, that this writer would consider the combination organ a heritage
item worthy of preservation for its uniqueness. Musically, this particular
hybrid works reasonably well because the electronic keyboard is tunable and
possesses nearly the same temperament as the pipes. As a lover of pipe
organs and something a bit opposite of substitutes, this writer is not too
happy about allowing this sort of money waster to become too popular.
