IF YOU'RE INTERESTED IN SINGING ... The place to be in the summer of 2005 is
Newfoundland, Canada. Indulge your musical, creative and scholarly spirit and
join us for this exciting event!

FESTIVAL 500 Sharing the Voices, in cooperation with Memorial University of
Newfoundland, invites proposals for presentations at The Phenomenon of Singing
International Symposium V, an integral academic component of this
international choral festival. The purpose of the Symposium is to gather
international expertise and provide a forum for interdisciplinary discourse
and performance, the dissemination of research, and the generation of further
knowledge relating to the phenomenon of singing. The Symposium invites
submissions relating to all aspects of singing and the voice.

The Phenomenon of Singing International Symposium V will take place in St.
John's, Newfoundland, Canada, from June 30 - July 3, 2005, at the School of
Music on the campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland.

SUBMISSION INFORMATION
Proposal submissions should consist of a 250-word abstract addressing focus
areas of singing such as artistic, physiological, cultural, sociological,
historical, pedagogical, psychological, compositional...and beyond! A
diversity of presentation formats is welcome. These could include paper
presentation, lecture-demonstration, lecture-recital, panel and roundtable
discussion. Presentations are generally 20-minutes in length, followed by a 10-
minute discussion period. Symposium V also invites submissions for panel
presentations in the following areas: gender and the voice, and authenticity
in singing styles and voice production. These panels will be selected from
submissions received by applicants expressing an interest in this particular
format (approximately 15-minute presentation with an invited discussant).
Furthermore, we encourage submissions relating to the
2005 special focus area for FESTIVAL 500: the celebration of the contribution
of Latin America to the singing world.

Deadline for proposal submissions is October 15, 2004. Selected papers will be
published in the Symposium V Proceedings. Please indicate your institutional
affiliation and e-mail address with your submission. Proposals may be
submitted by mail, fax, or e-mail.

2005 INVITED PRESENTERS:
Catherine Robbin, one of Canada's best known mezzo-sopranos, has established
an international reputation since her debut in 1972, performing with leading
conductors throughout the world. Having had an illustrious international
performing career with numerous operatic appearances, concert performances,
and recordings, Catherine has now retired from performance and is completely
dedicated to teaching, privately and most especially as Director of Vocal
Studies at York University (Toronto, Canada).

Jocelyne Guilbault, Professor of Ethnomusicology at the Music Department of
the University of California, Berkeley, USA, is a leading authority on the
traditional and contemporary music of the Caribbean. She writes about a wide
range of issues: the politics of labeling, the social construction of stardom,
the interconnected transnational worlds of contemporary musical
practices. Her book, Zouk: World Music in the West Indies has been described
as a "landmark achievement" that will "lift readers out of their easy chairs
and their complacency" (Timothy White in Billboard).

Maria Guinand has an extensive and mutli-faceted musical career as choral
conductor, professor, and leader of international choral projects. She
currently conducts three prestigious choirs in Venezuela: the Cantoria Alberto
Grau, the Orfeon Universitario Simon Bolivar and the Schola Cantorum of
Caracas with whom she has recorded and toured extensively.
Specializing in 20th century Latin American choral music, Maria has conducted,
lectured and adjudicated in the USA, Europe, Asia, Canada, and Latin America.

Martin Bernheimer, chief music and dance critic of the Los Angeles Times for
31 years, won the Pulitzer Prize in 1982. He can be heard regularly on the
intermission features of the Texaco/Metropolitan Opera broadcasts in addition
to broadcasts of the CBC. He now serves as New York music correspondent for
the Financial Times of London and Opera magazine, and
writes frequently for Opera News. Martin also has taught criticism at UCLA,
USC, CalState Northridge and the California Institute of the Arts.

Peggy Bennett is Professor of Music Education and Director of the early
childhood MusicPlay program at Oberlin College Conservatory (Ohio, USA).
Author of a variety of pedagogical and research articles, Peggy has co-
authored three books: SongWorks 1: Singing in the Education of Children,
SongWorks 2: Singing from Sound to Symbol, and SongPlay: A Collection of
Playful Songs for Children. Peggy has reignited earlier singing traditions by
starting the PlayParty for Oberlin area families.

Serge Lacasse is a professor of popular music theory and history at Laval
University and adjunct professor at the School for Studies in Art and Culture,
Carleton University (Quebec, Canada). Favouring an interdisciplinary approach,
and with a focus on voice, his research projects deal with many aspects of
recorded popular music aesthetics and culture such as phonographic staging of
voice, narratology and the recorded voice, and the culture of mix tapes. Serge
is active in the recording industry as a producer, songwriter, and arranger.

Earn Graduate Credit through FESTIVAL 500 CHORAL INSTITUTE !! FESTIVAL 500 and
Memorial University of Newfoundland co-sponsor a Choral Institute for those
interested in earning graduate credit through Memorial University. In this
institute, the choral festival and The Phenomenon of Singing Symposium V
create an unparalleled resource of opportunities for
graduate students and professionals to expand their knowledge of and
experience with all aspects of singing through general participation in both
the festival and symposium, engagement with internationally renowned artists
and scholars, and reflection and research. It is in this context that both the
Faculty of Education and School of Music at Memorial University will offer a
complement of graduate courses in the areas of choral conducting, vocal/choral
pedagogy, and Latin American singing
traditions and practices. Participants will be engaged in a series of varied
experiences designed to increase understandings of theoretical and practical
applications of vocal and choral music-making. Acceptance in the FESTIVAL 500
Choral Institute is dependent upon acceptance by Memorial University of
