A Fall Organ Adventure in ROME, NAPLES and ITALY, November 2-11, 2017: ten culture-filled days devoted to the organs and the history of the region in a very personal tour.
ROME - The Pope’s Church - San Giovanni Laterano and the beautiful Santa Maria in Trastevere - Six organs spanning the 1590’s, Luca Biagi, a 24’ organ of two manuals and pedalboard among the four organs in S. Giov. Laterano, to the 1702 Filippo Testa, “traditional” Italian organ of one manual and the Mutin-Cavaillé-Coll, 1911 at S. Maria Trastevere! Thus begins this individualized tour of remarkable organs in the ancient lands of Rome, Naples and fragrant Sicily! Dom Umberto Pineschi, organist, priest from Tuscany’s Pistoia will be our guide in Rome and Naples.
NAPLES - We offer an exceptional, private tour of the Treasure of San Gennaro and the awesome Baroque Cathedral of San Gennaro, with Vicenzo De Gregorio, Principal of the Pontificio Instituto di Music Sacra in Rome.
PALERMO, CATANIA, SIRACUSA - SICILY! Rich cultural conditions in Sicily offer a kaleidoscopic vision of culture and history: Byzantine to Baroque, the Greek and Norman-Arab periods, influences of Spain and Northern Europe - it is the meeting place between West and East, Africa and Europe. The tour encompasses related arts of architecture, fine arts, ceramics, landscape, wine and olive production - and salt at the famous Marsala salt flats! - not to mention unusual customs, cuisine and more. This is an organ tour that takes into account the culture around and within which the organs were built and used. It offers a rare and perhaps unique opportunity for organists and friends of the organ to broaden and enrich their knowledge of this particular musical history and to experience it in all its local flavors.
Six full days- 3 each in East and West -including the seven manual organ by Francesco La Grassa (1842) in Trapani and the five manual organ by Donato Del Piano (1755, 72 stops) in Catania, with other organs in Monreale, Abbazia S. Martino delle Scale ( concert), Val de Noto, Caltagirone and more. Our Sicilian expert, Gianfranco Nicoletti, has prepared extensive notes on the organs. He will be our guide, and time will be allotted to participants wishing to play the instruments.
Transportation Rome/Naples by train; Overnight ferry Naples/Palermo; private bus in Sicily; accommodations from four star hotels to Abbey bedrooms, all breakfasts and eight specially designed, artisanal meals.
