Hi Fritz,

My take on the C minor double concerto (BWV 1062) DNA is the concerto for two
violins in D minor, BWV 1043, transcribed by J S Bach's deft hand. The work was
transposed down a tone for the same reason as the Concerto in D major BWV 1054
(the E major Violin Concerto), so that the top note would be d'''.

Since we are on the subject of Harpsichord Concerto DNA, J S Bach also used
movements from Cantatas as the basis for some of his Concertos. The D minor, BWV
1052 is a transcription of the sinfonia and first choral movement of BWV 146 and
the last movement BWV 188. Most likely the Sinfonia was an earlier violin
concerto which was recycled for the cantata. One of the two fragments
(incomplete) Harpsichord Concertos BVW1059 was Sinfonia of the Cantata, BWV 35.
As the work is based upon a Sinfonia with an obbligato organ part, then there is
a good chance this would be a transcription of a transcription.

The source for the Harpsichord, Violin, Flute Concerto (Prelude and Fugue for
solo harpsichord, BWV 894 and trio sonata for organ in D minor, BWV 527 middle
movement. The Concerto in F major BWV 1057 is from the Brandenburg Concerto in
G, no.4, BWV 1049.

The only proven transcription of another composer of the Harpsichord Concertos
(or in this case the only quadruple Harpsichord Concerto) is the Concerto in A
minor, BWV 1065.

A version exists of the D minor Harpsichord Concerto that is attributed to KPE
Bach, there is some question as to one of the triple concertos also receiving
similar treatment (and is the only version to survive).

Best Regards,

Steve Foss

Subject: Provenance of BWV 1062

Can someone set me straight on the C minor double concerto (BWV 1062) by JS
Bach? My understanding is that it is transcribed from the violin double in Dm
but it is not clear if the transcription was done by the master himself.

Thanks,
Fritz
