It would help to know where you are in the world for starters. If you
are in the U.S.A., then Harpsichord Clearing House is the obvious
starting point. However, out of 8 instruments listed between $1 to
$2999, under Singles, Virginals and Spinets, and Clavichords, there was
only one I would even think twice about buying. If you can aim at up to
$4000, then your choice becomes wider. Personal opinion...I would not
consider any revival instrument, and that cuts out so many of the "low
cost" choices. Why? Because you cannot get a real good sense of what a
"harpsichord" is, and why it is different from a piano or any other
keyboard instrument. If you don't care about that, and that is your
right, then your choice becomes wider.

Other places to look in the U.S.A. include eBay, and especially
Craigslist. It is interesting what shows up on Craigslist, depending on
where you are in the country. And if you are friendly with any
harpsichord makers near you (again, where are you?), they may be able to
give you leads on things they know are on sale or that owners (or
descendants) are trying to dispose of. Also, no matter how little money
you can spend, if you don't have an idea what to look for when examining
a used instrument, you should have a friend or colleague who does check
it out. For example, in the case of kit built instruments, Zuckermann
and Hubbards, primarily, it is amazing how well built, and badly built
they can be. Many things can be fixed after the fact, but some things
cannot, without spending more time and money than they are worth.

Happy saving and hunting!
