This past Sunday I heard list member Hendrik Broekman's recital on his 1979 17th-C. French harpsichord, tuned in 1/5-comma meantone. Although he said it had been 25 years since he last performed, you would not have known it in his stylish presentation of a wide-ranging program of 17th-C. music: Sweelinck, Inglott, Bull, Dowland as arranged by Anon. and Schildt, Scheidemann, Froberger, L. Couperin.

The printed program notes were among the better I've read recently. Among his brief verbal comments, he compared the Bull "In Nomine IX" to being hit on the head with a 2x4 and liking it. Well, I don't like being hit by 2x4s, but I certainly liked the In Nomine!

The harpsichord was originally built on plans of Hubbard, which Hendrik later modified. It sounded good, although maybe voiced a bit loudly for my taste, including the 4' which he used quite a bit. Each 8' by itself was quite lovely.
