In 1990-1991 (yes, a long time ago), I was working on the Goldberg 
Variations.  I got some very good insights from a book whose author and 
title I can no longer remember; I do recall that in addition to the 
discussion of the Goldbergs, there was an extensive treatment of either 
the St Matthew Passion or B minor Mass (maybe both??).  The book was 
published in the mid to late 80s, I think.  I did some online searching 
but didn't come up with it.

I'm going back to the Goldbergs soon and would really like to reread 
that discussion.  Does this ring a bell for anyone?
