Please allow a little maybe sarcastic, but nevertheless honest
observation...
It seems to me that the next step, after the Froberger Baerenreiter edition,
will be to publish some sort of jigsaw puzzle edition where the performer
will receive a matrix-board and a million of little pieces (one-bar-long,
let's imagine), from which he will have an enormous amount of possibilities
of organising their version, sticking chosen versions of single bars onto
the matrix.
Surely the edition in question is magnificent in many aspects, but virtually
impossible to play from, and the price, especially in view of the number of
volumes available, is truly enormous. (I've tried to pick and buy just a few
volumes, but unfortunately for some reasons it seems that many works and the
multitudes of their versions are spread across the whole edition in a way
that choosing single volumes becomes impossible).
With five ossias, often more informative than suggestive, it's even hard to
produce an origami copy serving as a personal performance edition for a
recital. No wonder one rarely sees a harpsichordist playing from a printed
score, not from a scotch-and-scissors-made pile of sheets, often in poor
condition, which is a poor sight altogether...
That being said, it's surely a must, but rather for libraries perhaps?
Regards,
aleksander
