This is very sad news.

Nicolau was an extremely fine and refined player, full of originality,
fire, and intelligence, with a beautifully relaxed and supple technique.

I was a member of the jury for the Nantes Harpsichord Competition in 1984
where he won the first prize. He so clearly stood out above everyone else.
I particularly remember that in the Final he played JSB's Fifth Partita
with elegance and panache, keeping it fairly subdued until the last
movement, when he threw off the Gigue as if it were a light-hearted moment
of high energy. I don't remember many harpsichord performances from 30
years ago, but this is one I've never forgotten.

I've followed his career from a distance over the last 30 years, always
pleased to see the success he had. He deserved to be even better known. It
is a great loss.

Best wishes,
DM
