Hi John,

In my experience, making a flat reference work surface large enough for a soundboard or big harpsichord is surprisingly difficult. And keeping it reference quality flat over time is also hard. Also, any manufacturer of straight edges will tell you in short order that steel rulers are not straight edges! Put one up against a reference straight edge and observe.
