Hello Stephen
"Taste" in visual aesthetics seems as varied as taste in musical aesthetics. Those who want to travel in time and attempt to replicate the experience of living in the past will want to copy exactly. Some, who admire an aesthetic of the past but take issue with some detail, will modify. Others, for whom an antique look is of no value will be completely personal in their design.
The only problem I see is when there are serious clashes within: for example I fine tempera soundboard painting of flowers, insects and birds which clashes with rich "Rubenesque" lid painting, or, worse, a stark "Bauhaus" case and stand.

Subject: Improvisation and making
I have a most peculiar query. Among the makers here any of you given much thought, that you would be willing to share, to ornamentation and improvisation. I don't mean in playing the instrument but in building the instrument. However I do mean within the confines of the style and period of which we find the originals we're replicating represented. I've heard many times of makers know for their slavish copies moving onto making " in the style". I as well recall when I was making instruments full time, eventually I would strive to personalize my instruments yet remain true to the style and intention of the original.
Thank you, Stephen
