IMNSHO the exact position (calculated based on the desired temperament) will
fail to tune the fretting properly, because of different types of
distortion.
As a consequence, after you have positioned your tangents "exactly" and
tuned any of the 2, 3 or 4 notes sharing the same course, the other notes
will slightly out of tune with respect to the pitches you wish to hear in
the desired temperament
To fix this, every tangent need to be slightly repositioned or mostly just
bent for optimal tuning with the desired temperament. This can be done
either with electronic apparatus or (better and simpler) tuning a few
intervals by ear, whether pure or impure to different degrees according to
the temperament. Chapter 14 of my Unequal Temperaments book is devoted to
this very matter, with simple schemes for the different historical
temperaments.
Some "groups of different temperament" share the same fret positions. This
means that you position frets according to any temperament in the group, and
you can change the temperament by just retuning strings without moving the
frets. Examples of these groups:
- Pythagorean intonation, Pythagorean-Just (Ramos) and Semi-Pythagorean
- Standard 1/4 S.c. meantone and Mersenne-Chaumont
- Vallotti and Barnes
