My keyboards are laid before fitting into the instrument, a technique
brought over from my early piano years I'm afraid. I bore a fine
pinhole in the back of each key; this is done while the keys are still
in a blank to take a brass balance weight. These have been made from
9mm brass rod with a pin in the bottom to sit into the hole on the key
shaft. I have a set that are the weight of two jacks and another set
the weight on one jack to use on the upper manual. They are put onto
the keys once they have been eased on and are ready to level and left on
until the keys go into the box. That beds down all the back cloth
dressings for me over the couple of weeks or so before they are
needed. It also helps a lot when cutting the coupler dogs to fit
enabling me to do that job with great accuracy for each key and it upper
manual partner. Once the couplers have been cut and fitted, I simply
put a 1mm card under the upper manual back touch cloth and that gives me
a very accurate clearance for the coupler dog to upper manual key.
Without that the upper manual will create taps playing in coupler and
you also get help with the dip depth of the upper manual by create that
lost motion.Of course this would be a bit over the top for the one off
maker; I make a lot of instruments.
