Dear David,

it took a while, but the list archive has my answer already:
https://list.uiowa.edu/scripts/wa.exe?A2=ind0910&L=HPSCHD-L&H=1&P=133691 <https://list.uiowa.edu/scripts/wa.exe?A2=ind0910&L=HPSCHD-L&H=1&P=133691>

To repeat shortly where contra-B is to be found:

BWV 572, middle movement (early version in Walther’s hand D-B Mus. ms. Bach P 801, Faszikel 5)*
C-major Toccata BWV 564, in the Fugue, in Joh. Peter Kellner's copy
BWV 566 (the C-major version; 566a), fugue dito in Kellner's copy (the same ms. Berlin P286
(see Peter Williams: The organ music of J. S. Bach)

The current view seems (J.-C. Zehnder in the new Breitkopf edition of Bach’s complete works) to be that the middle movement of BWV 572 was originally to be played manualiter in the earliest version (the Weimar years, early or late). Only in a later stage, (late in Weimar or in Köthen) the bass part was given to the pedal with the remark in the title avec La Pedalle continu - that source, dated to end of 1722 is in hand of a Bach student, Bernhard Christian Kayser of Köthen.

None of the contra-Bs is essential, they all could be played an octave higher.
A specific, unheard-of-organ is not necessary, even if one wants to uphold the notion of organ repertoire.
