If the originator of this thread expects to be doing some banding 
himself and is seeking the imprimatur of historic authenticity he should 
forget it and use gold, whether or not "authentic". Gold has the virtue 
of not combining with oxygen. It retains its lustre forever. All of the 
substitutes ultimately corrode and dull, some more quickly than others. 
If the question arose out of mere curiosity, I apologize for my pedantry.
