Lovely quote Theodore, Thanks!!
Unfortunately, van Asperen had no authority to criticise Koopman.
To show why, I apologise for catching this this occasion to go offtopic and
repeat matter already discussed in this list.
Precisely almost 40 years ago van Asperen recorded C.P.E. Bach Prussian
Sonatas. Now, if there is a composer who wrote down, in more detail than any
predecessor, what he meant in his scores, it was precisely CPE: every single
one of his ornaments were to be played on the beat, never pre-beat!
Yet, incredibly, van Asperen plays instead most ornaments prebeat!
In case anybody wishes to verify this, I just Youtube'd "CPE Asperen" and
the very first hit I got is this one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vog7Aufuvgg
We can hear "prebeats", one after the other, from the very beginning!
I figure poor CPE turning around in his grave.
Even worse, van Asperen is not alone, not at all.
Paraphrasing something Joshua Rifkin told me when we met in Dublin a decade
ago, these "prebeaters" find that some modern opinion on CPE's music, most
likely one of the convolute and demonstrably-wrong ideas from Frederick
Neumann, is worthy more than the opinion of the composer!!
