quick comment that if I were redstone I'd put an unclimbable collar 
round my tree, and then tame them with gifts, cos they are entertaining 
neighbours
Also, I was reacting to Jim MacF's 'vermin' -a term which gets used on 
humans (me too) as often as not-  not reacting to killing other 
creatures per se, something one more or less has to reconcile oneself 
with in most agricultural ecosystems. I get my bone from an elfin 
butcher by whom no one could object to being killed. But Herr Brem 
could Never work in a slaughterhouse: fortunately there are enough 
farmers who prefer not to go there either for Herr Brem to have a 
comfortable business: must be fairly confortable - I couldnt get him to 
take any money for the (limousin) bones
