Dear members,
Apparently the Smithsonian is currently not able to provide copies of
technical drawings due to technical problems. Here is an excerpt of some
recent communication:
We have sold out of our remaining copies of the plans of which we used to
sell so many. As it became almost impossible to find traditional shops that
could handle reproduction of the large plans, we digitized them, thinking it
would be a simple matter to have them printed on demand as necessary. But we
have not been successful in getting them digitally printed at an accurate
100% scale. They often come out at 103%, or 96%, or whatever, no matter the
fact that the printer/plotter has been calibrated for 100%. I'm still
working to find a solution, but have not yet had any luck
By the way, same problem in Europe: modern copying machines cannot handle a
size > 96 cm. Due to legal reasons, copies are not allowed to be 100%
accurate (falsifying money). So, in any case, never trust plans blindly. In
the good old days, plans could be bought on mylar and I was told that these
were quite accurate.
Have a nice week,
Chris.
