I'm in Minnesota, probably one of the few drier and colder places in the winter than upstate New York, and my recommendation would be to go with whatever provides the most constant temperature.  

You didn't mention whether your studio had outside walls or windows, which would have a big effect on a recommendation.  If there are windows, and especially if they face the sun part of the day, the room can heat up substantially, even if is it well below zero outside (odd thing about winter, the coldest days are bright and sunny--no clouds to trap heat in).  In that case you would definitely not want the room unheated, as the temp could go above and below the dew point and cause condensation on the instruments.

Sight unseen, I'd say set it at 45 or 50, draw the shades, hope for the best, and enjoy your time away from the doldrums of winter.
