Thank you for the comment Richard.. I have respect for the 'scientific', as well as traditional approach. To each his own. Combination of the two maybe has most sense.
I also like to record what I'm doing especially with soundboard measurements. For me calipers are very usefull tool. Of course, ability to read wood, as Michael said, is something completely different.
