Hi All,
My bridge pins are in and the sound board has been glued in. It is now time
to drill holes for the tuning pins.
Following the suggestions found on this this forum’s past discussions and I
made the clavichord tuning pins from 16 penny nails. I also made my my own
tuning wrench with my Craftsman 109.21270 metal lathe first so I am sure
the tuning pins will fit the wrench! Forethought at last!
The pins (made from a single box/run of wire 16 penny nails), average
3.45mm diameter and I hand ground an ever so slight taper on the lower ¼ –
1/5 of the pin.
How do I determine what size hole to drill for these tuning pins?
How tight should the pin be in the hole?
How much torque should be required to turn the pin without the string
tension?
How far down the hole should one be able to insert the pin before it
requires hammering?
I just don’t want to mistakenly drill a hole too large and then have to
plug it up and then re-drill. I know it it just has to be snug enough to
not unwind under the string tension but since I have never touched, tuned
or turned a clavichord tuning pin I am ignorant to say the least!
Regards,
Phil
