Hi Andrew and David,
Yes, I expect removing the nameboard doesn't change the volume of the instrument overall. In my particular case, lifting or removing the nameboard feels different from the boost a player gains by removing the music desk, because the additional sound comes up at me from lower down and round a corner. Whatever the measureable acoustic effect is, I quite like this- it's in quite a small unresonant room by the way.
