I hesitate to disagree with David Jensen, who certainly knows his
onions; but I have moved my Flemish double three times across the
Atlantic in shipping containers, each time packed by myself in a well
fitting crate, sitting on its spine, and I am certain that the
instrument did not shift inside its crate.

I placed several layers of expanded poly sheet in first and allowed
only enough space around the instrument (in its fleece-lined verdura
cover) to enable it to be inserted and removed without trapping my
hands. The spaces around were filled with the expanded poly sheet (in
the bentside space I put my collection of sweaters and other clothes
that dont weigh much). I am not sure what the material of these large
1/4 poly sheets is called but it doesnt give too much, while
providing a good cushion. The first box I kept in the garage, where
it was used as a convenient shelf, and the second I have taken apart
and is now stored in an attic. (With a few more bits of wood, one
could also make the box into a book case!)
