The comments about the interpretation of iconography certainly apply to
photographs as well. I am thinking of the famous photo of Landowska playing an old
clavichord (see "Landowska on Music"). She blissfully poses for the camera,
making one think she must have loved the clavichord. In fact, the clavichord on
the photo has no listing, which would have sounded dreadful. Landowska scorned
the clavichord in print.
