I tried casein and it has some way to go to emuating ivory. The
'grain' pattern is nothing like that seen in ivory. the material is
very chippy and requires a lot of machining to get it into the correct
size. it burns very easily when polishing. its harder to polish than
ivory. its very hydroscopic and dry glue joints, ie unstuck covers can
occur.Its more work than ivory, although this could be rectified by
having a better prepared product from the manufacturer.
The main problem is I know it ain't ivory!
