I used to feel that the best thing would be to have a small sound at the
start of a CD that is only audible if the track is being played too loud.
(But I never managed to convince a record company to agree to do this...)
That approach would leave people free to listen louder or softer, as they
wish, but would provide them with a audio scale, similar to rulers down the
side of certain images.

But the problem is now, with CDs virtually dead, and everything existing
online as just single tracks (unfortunately), it would mean putting such a
sound at the start of every track, which would definitely be a nuisance and
intrusive.

Many people listen to the harpsichord at the wrong level, too (too loud).
