Hi Dennis,

Ah, the Lefebvre. A rich source of lessons in the art of making fake furniture (sorry, Tilman, no disrespect intended to anybody!). You can indeed be sure that Skowroneck’s techniques were highly faithful to original practices, even down to including marks of a fake restoration, along with an inscription in a Tintenschrift pencil, an authentic pencil type from the supposed time of the restoration in the 19c. Wonderful! Skowroneck’s essay on this grand deception he conspired to make with Leonhardt is well worth a read.

Andrew

I know
Skowroneck used lampblack in shellac for his Lefebvre, so I assume this
was at least one of the techniques used at the time for black cases.
