Exactly Greg.
But of course not only in fast passages. In Bach's Sinfonia 13 bar/measure 19 the (piano) fingering in my Peters edition is 31 on CE, 4 (not shown) I suppose on F and 5 on G, 3 on A, 4 and 5 I suppose on B and C.
If however I play 12 on CE, 3 on F, 2 on G and simply run up to top C with fingers 345 I get beautiful phrasing almost automatically and the music sings. Similarly in bar/measure 24 - 51 on CE, 234 on GAB and the slightest pause for breath as in singing before playing CD with fingers 12.
As you say, fingering - certainly on the harpsichord - makes the music.
Best
Ph.
