Hi Dongsok,

One could split hairs here, but true vermilion pure pigment as bought in artists supply shops and sold by the colourmen of the 18c is nothing more or less than ground mercury sulfide HgS, from cinnabar. This compond is toxic to a degree. Not all mercury compounds are necessarily toxic due the the presence of mercury. HgCl is not toxix because it is not soluble in the human body.
