(not on the sounding portion of course)
Could the core fatigue come from your wrapping-leather tension causing twist?

Splice ? I am intrigued ... I never managed to splice (brass) strings.
The only solution was to simply twist the broken ends and solder the joint
- as in picture. works nicely as emergency repair. Incidentally the
picture is from my home-made Hubert from the same (awsome) plan.
