I write to mourn the death of Dr. J. Reilly Lewis, who died at his home
in the suburbs of Washington , DC, of massive heart failure. His death
was untimely at the age of 71. Dr. Lewis was a graduate of Oberlin
College and subsequently pursued and won his masters and his doctorate
in keyboard performance at Juilliard.
As a young man, he founded the Washington Bach Consort, a volunteer
group of singers and instrumentalists dedicated to the performance of
the works of J.S.Bach. He remained its moving spirit and conductor for
the remainder of his life. In its early years, Reilly would have
preferred to do his performances with period instruments, but in
Washington in those years, performers of professional quality on such
instruments were thin on the ground. I cannot say how he may have
progressed in the years since I and my wife, both of whom sang in his
chorus, left the area.
Suffice it to say that he brought Bach's music to a wide audience for
many years, was a virtuoso on both organ and harpsichord and was the
best conductor with whom I ever had to do.
/Requiescat in pacem./
