You don't necessarily require a van.  A Honda Fit can accommodate a
French Double.  That's how mine was delivered.

Look around for moving supply stores to find moving blankets and straps.

For my last two house moves, one in a Pod and one by UHaul truck, I
simply cut up sheathing grade plywood and styrofoam sheets - principally
for insulation with some cushioning.

You also want cushioning between the lid and top of instrument and strap
to keep snug.  I like Lee Valley Dome Bumpers - inauthentic but
invisible.  Pad where the strap(s) go around bare corners.  

If using a generic moving blanket, you must ensure the instrument won't
slip out.  

In good weather two careful people can get a bare instrument through
doorways and up and down stairs.

A musician or rental operation will use fitted cover, spine board and
dolly.

You have to weigh hours of building a box that can withstand commercial
movers versus the time of driving it there and back yourself.
