It's kind of funny--when he still was in full stride, my dad actually used to be a little secretive about his lifter hook thingies. I guess that's the only of his "ideas" about which he didn't just tell anybody. He later changed and I'm sure that he would have been thrilled to read this discussion. Sadly, now not even my mom is around any more, so there's nobody who was involved left to tell the story to.

He made his lifters in his own shop from home-bent aluminum strips. Not beautiful, but easy, and inside an instrument, he didn't care.
