There are passages in William Byrd's keyboard music where -- even on
smaller shorter keyboards of the sixteenth century -- it's perfectly clear
(to me, at least) that we are intended to use the thumb, and also to use
all five fingers in scale passages.
But these are not pieces for beginners, or inexperienced players...
