A quick clarification, as the courier of the instrument mentioned above: I
brought the instrument indoors on the coldest evenings. I left it in the
van overnight only when the low was 20 degrees F or higher.

This conversation goes exactly to my own internal debate about it, however,
and I'm glad to be reading so many well-informed opinions on the subject
that more or less agree with what I had thought.
