Hi Rob,
These pins were not holding up to the tension either, and 'flag-poling' seems to describe it. The taper is on the bottom tip, for a good 14 mm, leaving like only 10 mm of full cylindrical fit, whereas the bottom could tilt as it is not constrained. No doubt these could work well if everything else is fine, but not so in this case. So the taper is not along the full length of the pin, where a tap might tighten it a bit.
