Well, this is a coincidence, Anne. I was given one of those spinets a
year ago, complete but not in playable condition. I have undertaken its
renovation (not "restoration") in behalf of a friend of mine who has
severe space limitations in her home. The nameboard slides out in the
way an Italian nameboard does. This must be one of the later kits as the
tapered piece which supports the bottom of the music is hinged to the
back of the nameboard. This facilitates tuning, I suppose, but it is
still smarter simply to remove the nameboard. I do that with my Italians
as well.
As to renovation, I have made a new, proper harpsichord keyboard, new
jacks, register, lower guide and restrung the thing. There is voicing
and regulation yet to do and some small casework veneer repairs to make,
plus probably a re-build of the stand (three individual screw-in legs)
which would make playing the instrument like cavorting on a trampoline.
Except for the bass, strong but characterless, the sound ain't bad. I
call the project my "Sow's Ear". The purse will not be silk but I'm
hoping for a good grade of nylon... I will send you a couple of photos
in an email off-list which will show the nameboard/music desk details.
